Su di me
When I first joined LT, I failed to understand the point of the site and didn't know who would look for song translations that were word-for-word, but ultimately not singable; no rhyming, no rhythm, too many/not enough syllables and other such nitpicks. Only the spirit, meanings and messages behind the original lyrics were retained. Back then, I experimented with translating and covering my own poetic translations in Hebrew (as well as broken Yiddish) and joined an Israeli community dedicated to this, hence why I came here with such a misguided approach. I was even dumb enough to complain to the users who fulfilled my first two requests, not knowing why I "received" translations that didn't fit the metre. Turned out there have been singable translations here before the "Non/Disney Fandubs" category, as well as an option to leave comments for translators when adding a request.
However, more recently, I began to rely on this very site when locating lyrics for songs in languages mom and I don't really know; or rather, English/Hebrew translations of them to help understand what they mean. That's when it occurred to me there actually is an audience for such translations and even I am among those who occasionally need them, giving me incentives for more activity on this account. In some cases, translating verbatim can be about as challenging as coming up with singable lyrics when you have to look for approximations of local slang, explain cultural/historical references that may not be known to many readers, convey the writers' intentions more clearly or whatever other obstacles may be encountered. It may seem like a "downgrade" compared to what I used to do when I joined, but it still comes with its own challenges to deal with.
