Парус
Белеет парус одинокий
В тумане моря голубом...
Что ищет он в стране далёкой?
Что кинул он в краю родном?
Играют волны - ветер свищет,
И мачта гнётся и скрипит...
Увы, - он счастия не ищет
И не от счастия бежит!
Под ним струя светлей лазури,
Над ним луч солнца золотой
А он, мятежный, просит бури,
Как будто в бурях есть покой!

A sail
A sail gleams white on the horizon
In the blue fog of endless sea.
What is it seeking in its travels?
What guilty secret did it flee?
The waves are dancing with wind’s howls,
The ship’s mast bends and softly creaks;
But not for joy its bow prowls
And not from joy it’s stern retreats!
Beneath – the stream is light and pure,
Above – sun’s golden light is bliss:
But he, the rebel, seeks storm’s fury,
As if in storms he can find peace!
