A battered boat moves

Все-таки не под килем, а под бортом - на поверхности. Плеск волн в глубине вряд ли возможен.

"Под бортом" (under the side) doesn't sound right in English either. Maybe "On either side - the splash of dark waves" or "Around the ship - the splash of dark waves"?

"Под бортом" здесь означает не совсем "ниже борта", это морской язык, мне кажется, это что-то вроде "под воздействием корабля" или именно Around the ship.
