This Is Love

C'est l'amour

Tu ne vaux rien, rien
Tu pourrais me tuer et tu aurais bien raison

J'ai mon couteau, j'ai mon arme
Voyons si tu cours vite
Tu pourrais penser que tu peux me faire mal

Oh, on m’a frappé quand j’étais petit

Caveat: I'm not a native speaker...
'Anything but blood' - 'rien d'autre que le sang'?
'Get out of this pattern of pain' - 'sortir de ce dessin de douleur'? (As it gets washed away by the rain, I think it's that sort of a pattern). Or, if you don't think one can 'sortir d'un dessin', 'quitter'?
Maybe a 'que' in front of 'je ne change rien' to make it obvious it goes with 'si je promets' (I think that works grammatically). 'I was good' - 'j'étais sage?
You've got typos in 'je vais TE montrer', 'squelettes', 'une foit', 'ça te rendras'.

Thank you so much. This is very helpful. So many typos! I guess it was getting late x)

I already made some adjustments according to your advice. I really like your suggestion of "dessin"; that's very good.

I wonder, wouldn't "Je suis idiot de croire / Que c'était rien d'autre que le sang" mean the opposite? That the singer believed it was nothing but blood from the start? In the original, they call themselves an idiot for thinking there was more to it than blood.

"ça te rendra", just like "ça te rend", should be written without a final -s.

I tried to recap hereunder what I noticed, but as many of these points are only nuances, you must not take everything for granted (there are a few grammatical errors, though).
-----
In general, I would say that the translation is good, except for some details or nuances :
- the typos already mentioned by Y... (let's call him so, it will be easier ;) )=, plus :
-- si tu essaye > essayes
- this was anything but blood > I understand "c'était tout sauf du sang" (meaning : c'était n'importe quoi sauf du sang)
- to get out / Of this pattern of pain : perhaps "pour (te) sortir De ce schéma de souffrance" (or : pour échapper à ce schéma, à ce scénario de souffrance) ?
- If there's any sleep at night : si même j'arrive à dormir la nuit, si on peut parler de dormir la nuit
- A jealous fool who won't let go : "avancer" ??? un imbécile jaloux qui ne lâchera pas prise ?
- si je regretterais mes actions > si je regrettais (incorrect French, after "si" here it should be an imperfect)
- to stoop so low = s'abaisser autant. (Est-ce que vraiment je m'abaisserais autant ?)
- stick around : reste dans le coin, reste un peu (it's kind of familiar, I would perhaps say "T'en va pas")
- But I just love to pick a fight : Mais j'adore chercher la bagarre
- I was hit as a kid : I understand "j'ai été frappé quand j'étais petit", or better "on m’a frappé quand j’étais petit" (not : j'étais frappé)
- I can't change a bit : je ne peux rien changer
- Well then someone has to die > Eh bien alors quelqu'un doit mourir
- Once you chase me down the hole : I understand « après m’avoir pourchassé dans mon trou » ?
- ça te rendra(s) mal à l’aise > ça te mettra mal à l’aise
- Oh then the darkness rolls in > Oh, alors les ténèbres se rassembleront (or : s’avanceront)
- And you'll forget who I have been > Et tu oublieras qui j’ai été (not « ce qui j’étais », incorrect)
- I think you better tell your friends to go > Je crois que tu ferais mieux de dire à tes amis de partir
- You gotta wonder what it meant > Tu te demanderas ce que ça voulait dire

There would me some more minor points to discuss, among others ambiguities (for ex : The simple love that your grandparents had, I understand that it means "The simple love your grandparents felt for each other")

Thank you so much for the detailed response. Very kind. This is my first time translating lyrics to French, so it was a big step out of my comfort zone, and I really appreciate all the help :D

- "This was anything but blood" by itself would mean "It was nothing but blood/It was only blood", but in the context of "I'm an idiot for thinking this was anything but blood", it means "I thought it was something more". Is that what "C'était tout sauf du sang" means?

- What did you think of Ymdeithydd's suggestion "quitter ce dessin de douleur"? I liked that a lot.

- The jealous fool line. Yes, I know. I had no idea how to translate the phrase not letting go, so I opted for being unable to move on instead. Or at least that was the idea x)

- Si je regrettais : Ah so, that's why that sounded so wrong. Thank you!

- Once you chase me down the hole : I read that as an allusion to Alice in Wonderland going down a rabbit hole, but I think it's purposefully ambiguous, and I like your suggestion.

- "The simple love that your grandparents had" definitely means the love that they felt for each other. I realise my translation is more ambiguous, the clarification just didn't seem worth the risk of making the sentence clunky.

If you feel like going more in depth, I'd love to discuss this with you.

You're welcome. Actually, when I fist read your translation, I found it quite good, it was only at second sight that I thought one could find some nitpicking.

- About "to chase me down the hole", yes, I think it refers to Alice in Wonderland ; I couldn't find a better equivalent yet.
- "it was anything but blood" : perhaps "c'était autre chose que du sang", a little lighter than "c'était quelque chose d'autre que du sang" ? I'm not quite sure, but I understand that "anything" here means "something, whatever it might be" (except blood)
- "quitter ce dessin de douleur" doesn't seem false, but it sounds a little strange in French. First, when listening to it, one might understand "quitter ce dessein de douleur" (dessein = plan, design, intention), but anyway "dessin de douleur" seems odd. Perhaps "sortir de ce cadre de souffrance" ? If I come upon a better solution, I'll tell you.
- About "L'amour simple de tes grands-parents", it's right, but one might understand "the love your grandparents had for you" (although it seems a little ambiguous in English too). Perhaps "l'amour simple comme du temps de tes grands-parents", or something like that ?
- The same for " But you'll love, love, love it, this is love" : "tu l'aimeras" is right, but in French, as we have no neuter gender, the pronoun "le" might refer to something or to somebody. I would suggest "Mais tu aimeras, tu aimeras, tu aimeras ça, c'est l'amour" for example.

Anyway it's not to easy as it first seems, especially when considering that this is no Academic English, and not always quite explicit...

Congratulations for your level in French !

Thank you! The nitpicking is appreciated, as are all your marvellous suggestions. I made some more adaptions in the meantime. I have to say, though, I really like the double meaning of "ce dessin/dessein de douleur". I think it kind of works in the context. It's a behavioural pattern, but it certainly seems designed. So, I'll leave it for now.
