Figuratively; To avoid an unpleasant situation, or one that could become so. This is so to avoid physical or status injury, or confrontation in an organization, relationship, or other similar intervention.
Literally;
1. To rest on one knee or to assume a firing position in shooting and such.
2. In American (U.S.) football, to touch one knee to the ground. This halts the play while holding the ball. It ends the current play and downs the ball. No tackling is allowed at that time.
3. Today a few players have used this as a protest move. It is considered highly disrespectful to many. They have done this during the playing of the national anthem.
