Dreizehn

Thirteen

I never get enough
Because my self-deception
I swallow one whole, I could be a little more drunk 1
Crude and ruined, it lives without shame
Slowly I become sick, the white giant was not real

People steal my time
I make people sorry
The glass is empty again
I already need more again

13 my clock strikes 13 2
Just a number
I don't give a shit

My clock strikes 13
It turns to me
I don't turn to it

Wild and overwound, brain out, anything goes
Light, flash, vodka, fist
I won't get out of here alive anymore
High and overheated, sweated blood and brandy
Whatever I get, I'll drink away, until I can't hold my head up anymore 3

13 my clock strikes 13
Just a number
I don't give a shit

My clock strikes 13
It turns to me
I don't turn to it

It doesn't strike 1
It doesn't strike 2
It doesn't strike 3
Not 4
Not 5
Not 6
Not 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
It strikes

13 my clock strikes 13
Just a number
I don't give a shit

My clock strikes 13
It turns to me
I don't turn to it

  • 1. Breit usually means wide, but colloquially can mean drunk or stoned.
  • 2. 13 is 1:00 PM. However, as pointed out, since an analog clock does not have 13 hours labelled on it, it could be a sign of how deranged he is or his world is. Left up for interpretation.
  • 3. Apparently a German expression which metaphorically means "I'll drink away what I get until I put my neck on the counter"...as in, consuming so much alcohol, you are no longer able to hold your head up and collapse onto the counter, unable to hold your head/neck up anymore.

I did some research on the line "Was kommt mach' ich weg..." and I found out that "wegmachen" in this context means "drink up". So, it's something like "Then I'll drink up until I can't hold my head up anymore".

Wow, that is a ridiculously hard sentence to decode! The original expression (wegmachen) makes enough sense in my head, I'm surprised they use such weird prepositions like "zum Hals" (to the neck) and "im Tresen" (in the counter). Until I put to the neck in the counter? What a weird way for them to phrase it, I wonder if it's grammatically sound. Hopefully a native will read this and let us know if it's grammatically correct. The lyrics have been corrected, thank you for the comment!

Not sure if it's worth mentioning, but "Schnapps" is also an English word, borrowed by the Germans. I don't know, however, if "Schnaps" refers to one type of beverage or hard liquor in general, but I believe the English "Schnapps" is the former.

In English, it is a specific kind of beverage. In German, it would refer to any kind of hard alcoholic drink. It is derived from the German word "schnappen" which means "to snap"...it was named so because the liquor is usually consumed in one quick swallow, usually from a small glass (aka shots). A good English translation for the German Schnaps is "brandy" or "distilled beverage".

I think that, while 13 does equal 1pm in military time, it's more meaning that the clock is somehow wrong or totally warped. Like, a normal 12 hour clock hitting 13. It just doesn't make sense, but it emphasizes how he might be perceiving it totally weird because of being so "fucked up".

Who knows, that's how I perceived it anyway.

Very nice point. It doesn't seem to make sense for a clock to strike 13. I will add this in the footnote. Thank you! (also, I like your name)
