A little context: this song (like many of Chico's songs) was written during the brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985), a very dark time in Brazil's history. Artists where constantly censored (and sometimes even tortured or exiled) by the military, so many of them found ways to disguise their real thoughts and opinions into their songs, like in this case (using the word "cálice" [chalice]), to simbolize the feeling of impotence and constant silencing. Music was a very powerful way of expressing their thoughts and keeping up the hope of the people, especially at music festivals.
