A toy trader by day: Refers to the character Childe (Tartaglia) and his story quest, in which he pretends that he is a toy trader to shelter his young siblings from the reality that he works for the Fatui, a malevolent organization.

you can never know I'm on your side: Refers to how Childe (Tartaglia) betrays the Traveler (the main character of Genshin Impact) in the main storyline, but later has an amicable relationship with the Traveler after they realize that he has good intentions.

I am not your shining knight: A play on the fact that Childe (Tartaglia) is often deceptive and not who he appears to be, despite the amicable front he puts on.

There is light and darkness beating in one heart ...: The bridge of the song here demonstrates Childe's complexity as a character. Childe (Tartaglia) is devoted to his family, but also to the Fatui. While his devotion to his family is pure and kind-hearted, his devotion to the Fatui is dark and tainted with blood. He appears to be good-natured but his intentions occasionally drift toward the malicious side for the sake of protecting the people that he cares about.

between the lines: Refers to the lines of "good and evil", as Childe's actions lie within a gray area. He essentially embodies the archetype of "bad deeds done for a noble cause" as his main goal is serving his Archon (his nation's god figure) and protecting his family, although his means of doing so are less-than-favorable.
