De Koek

The Cake

[Verse 1]
The cake was gone*
But you baked more
You wrapped them up
And gave them to me to take home
And once I got home
I took a bite
I took the bait
And thought

[Chorus]
I wish you were here tonight
Why would I pretend?
(Why, why would I pretend?)
I want sweet and soft
Why would I pretend I can sleep?
When I'm actually lying awake and waiting

[Verse 2]
And I get up
And you stay asleep
No, no breakfast, I've had my fill with you
The way to the heart is through the stomach
And you know that all too well
Because as soon as the tin is empty, you start brewing love potions
Honey, don't you know that that
Backfires eventually
But oh well, but oh well

[Chorus]
You were here tonight
Why would I pretend?
(Why, why would I pretend?)
I want sweet and soft
Why would I pretend I can sleep?
When I'm actually lying awake and waiting

[Chorus]
Tonight, why would I pretend?
(Why would I pretend, why?)
Because I want sweet and soft
Why would I pretend I can sleep?
When I'm actually
As if I can sleep
When I'm actually
As if I can sleep
When I'm actually
Lying awake and waiting

* "De koek is op" (the cake is gone) is an idiom that means the party's over, or something that was once good has come to an end. Often used in the context of a relationship that has run its course.
Also I should add that 'koek' is not exactly the same thing as 'cake' but for the purpose of this song it's close enough. Sweet baked goods
