Любви, надежды, тихой славы
Недолго нежил нас обман,
Исчезли юные забавы,

Нетерпеливою душой
Отчизны внемлем призыванье.
Мы ждем с томленьем упованья
Минуты вольности святой,
Как ждет любовник молодой
Минуты верного свиданья.
Пока свободою горим,
Пока сердца для чести живы,
Мой друг, отчизне посвятим
Души прекрасные порывы!
Товарищ, верь: взойдет она,
Звезда пленительного счастья,
Россия вспрянет ото сна,
И на обломках самовластья
Напишут наши имена!
To Chaadaev
We were spoiled, but not for long,
By love, by hope, by silent glory.
Like dreams and like a dawn fog,
The joys of youth left us too early.
But a desire burns within us yet.
We hark to calls of Mother Earth,
With a restless soul, with a child's heart,
Under the weight of fatal force.
We await with the crave and hopes
The onset of the desired freeing,
As young lover anticipates
The moment of a faithful meeting.
While we burn for the 'Land of the free,1
While we have honor in our hearts,
We ought, my friend, to give to country
The noble motions of our souls!
Believe, my comrade, soon she will shine,
-The star of captivating happiness.
Russia will awaken from her dream,
And, on the autocracy's wreckages
Will be written our glorious names!
