Boxes

My father has always been a bricklayer
He hates complainers, quiet people, and optimists
He never has time for love
And all those other things invented by communists
His degree in surveying has hung in the attic for twenty years
In a dusty case
And as a kid I dreamed of having a case for myself
That meant I know how to do things
He wanted me to study architecture
Or engineering
But I wanted to be a musician
I spent my evenings playing the guitar
I remember one day he took me aside
He told me: "You don't understand shit about life
Because only those who get their hands dirty
have the privilege to have a clear conscience"

Yes but I'm not like you
How do you know what I'll be?
Yes but I'm not like you
Make sure you never forget that

It was a bit like a Jehovah's Witness
My future often rang the doorbell
And I didn't even try to open up
Just to become an engineer or an architect
I wanted to make people cry
And nobody gets emotional in front of bricks
Because deep down houses are just boxes
Where people hide when it rains outside
And then one day I went to London
To study music at the university
And during those years between one exam and the next
I thought a lot about what Dad said

Yes but I'm not like you
What do you know about what I'll be?
Yes but I'm not like you
Make sure you never forget that

And now I have an attic too
And a piece of paper in a clean case
And I'm not an architect or an engineer
My dad somehow accepted my life
I used to tell him I'm not like you
I'm different, I'm better
But deep down songs are just boxes
Where people hide when it rains outside
