Marriage
Then Almitra spoke again and said, "And what of Marriage, master?"
And he answered saying:
You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.

Dann sprach Almitra abermals und sagte:
"Und was ist mit der Ehe, Meister?"
Und er antwortete und sprach:
Ihr seid zusammen in die Welt gekommen,
und ihr werdet auf immer zusammen sein.
Ihr werdet zusammen sein, wenn weiße Schwingen des Todes eure Tage zunichtemachen.
Ja, ihr werdet selbst zusammen sein im stummen Gedenken Gottes.
Haltet jedoch Räume frei in eurem Beisammensein
und lasst die Winde des Himmels zwischen euch tanzen.
Liebt einander, aber die Liebe soll euch nicht in Fesseln legen:
Lasst sie eher ein Meer sein, das zwischen den Ufern eurer Seelen wogt.
Füllt einander die Becher, aber trinkt nicht aus einem.
Gebt einander von eurem Brot, aber esst nicht vom selben Laib.
Singt und tanzt zusammen und seid voll Freude,
aber der eine lasse den anderen auch für sich,
so wie die Saiten einer Laute für sich sind
und doch im Akkord erschallen.
Schenkt euch eure Herzen, aber gebt sie nicht in des anderen Obhut.
Denn nur die Hand des Lebens kann euer Herz halten.
Und steht zusammen, jedoch nicht zu nahe beieinander:
Denn die Säulen des Tempels stehen für sich,
und Eiche und Zypresse wachsen nicht im Schatten des andern.
