So oder so

Either Way

Do what they tell you to
Then you can do what you want
Don't start crying
Don't make it worse than it is

You can be young and talented
Completely devastated 1 and frustrated
No woman, no horse
No house, no stove
No castle, no yacht
What have you done wrong?

You say
You want it, but you're just pretending
A quiet yes, a loud no

What happens will happen, either way
It is how it is, either way
It will stay as it is, either way
Every sin will be atoned

What happens will happen, either way
It is how it is, either way
It will stay as it is, either way
Everyone gets what they deserve

Don't do what they tell you to
Then you can do what you want
Don't stop believing in
What is wrong and what is right

Do you want to be richer than rich?
Then you have to be even realer than real
No love, no jealousy
No rest, no time
No hero, no battle
What have you done wrong?

You say
You want it, but you're just pretending
A quiet yes, a loud no

What happens will happen, either way
It will stay as it is, either way
It remains how it remains, either way
Every sin will be atoned

What happens will happen, either way
It will stay as it is, either way
It remains how it remains, either way
Everyone gets what they deserve

Whether sick from happiness
Or blind with envy
One thinks
And feels pity for himself
Feels so much pity for himself

  • 1. Am Boden sein literally means "to be on the ground". Figuratively, it means to be devastated or broken up.

There's a final verse missing:

Ob krank vor Glück
Ob blind vor Neid
Der Mensch, er denkt
Und tut sich leid
Tut sich so leid

Yes, "(whether) sick of happiness" does imply that he doesn't want to be happy anymore, he's had too much of it. I meant to translate it as "sick from happiness"...my bad! Thanks for expanding on the meaning of "sich leid tun", I've always seen leid as a form of sorrow or pain. Corrections have been made.

personally I'd translate Frau as wife instead of woman in the second stanza but I'm not sure. It just seems to go better with what the stanza is trying to say in my opinion.
