[English and Japanese language question]
Hello,
When I say "I was watching at the snow bleeding."
Does it sound funny? Does it sound like the blood is bleeding?
I'm having a hard time translating "雪が滲むのを見つめていた".
I ended up translating it, "I was staring at the snow oozing".
Does it sound strange to use "bleeding" for snow?
I don't want to use "blurring" for "Nizimu". (dictionary is recommending "blur" for Nijimu all the time.)
May be "spreading" is better than "oozing".
"I was staring at the snow spreading".
You're right, it would sound very poetic to say the snow was 'bleeding' onto the ground and 'blurring' definitely doesn't sound right. Allow me to be the one on the English side to look up the Kanji online and try to give you a good idea.
滲む appears to be one of those Japanese words that has many meanings in English. It looks like it means, in general, for something to slowly leak or spread out like a liquid. This means it can translate to something like 'oozing', 'bleeding' or 'blurring' because those are words that mean similar things in English about loose, liquid things running or leaking.
In this case, I think a good translation for it is something like
"I was staring at the spreading snow"
As in:
I was staring at the snow, which was spreading out
