Q?

Q?

Why is it that when we hold our hands right now
The warmth we can feel is nostalgic?
Why? Summer rain wreaking havoc in an abyss
Your smiling gaze makes me want to cry

Call out to me with that voice

This weakness I can't speak of to a soul -
I realize that it's a support upon which to stand strong
And it's because we're so different that you're dear to me
I just want to understand who we are

As we live on, our scars increase
And yet we still search on for our reason
As they stack up, they become more beautiful
I want to understand right now; I want to shout it all out!

I'm here, I'm here

You've paid for it
Try to catch me
Why did it turn out like this?

I'm here, I'm here

An overflowing glow, dwelling in the path ahead that splits and then is cut off:
To the connection - either that, to us, who have deceived and played it down as we saw fit -
Time is very silent, frighteningly so
Wasting this knowledge left unused; taking the penalty

Severing ties - only forgiving the same colors
So are you going to kill us with yesterday again? When you harped on all that wasn't (1)
It's invariable: if you take the pain which was captured at too revealing of a resolution
And cover up even that as "love", that's just not you anymore (2)

This awareness that I won't speak of to a soul -
I bury it away into the depths of concrete
And it's because we're so different that you're dear to me
I just want to go after this event

"Turning even sorrow to money
Nothing is more sublime than you as you grasp your brush" - tell me that (3)

Suffering, drunken on the silence that flutters to and fro
Before long, even the camellia leaves will fall
As we suffer, only more consequences close in on us
So that we just walk through the white midnight

From the moment we were brought into life, we've known
That surely, with every mistake we've made
We were wishing for nothing but the best - we must have been

Everything we can't speak of to a soul -
The more we come to know it, we turn pale
And all the things that are "wrong" become dear to us (4)
I just want to understand who we are

As we live on, our scars increase
Tie together a knot to overwrite that
And become beautiful!
I want to understand right now; I want to shout it all out!

TRANSLATION NOTES

1) "All that wasn't" is my translation of "違" (which she sings as "i"). This usually isn't a word on its own, but she used this character in isolation poetically. The character means things along the lines of "different", "off", "incorrect", "mistake", and so on. Also, the feeling of this sentence is like "So you're just going to kill us again? Just like that?"

2) The word "hainori" is used here, which means "to assume someone else's identity to avoid being caught for a crime". The idea is that they're avoiding the consequences or reality of their pain by making that pain "assume the identity" of "love", as if it's a good thing instead. "Too revealing of a resolution" is like the pain was captured with a camera in HD, so that all of its ugliness could be seen clearly and unflatteringly. In conclusion, she's saying something like "When you know just how ugly this pain is and yet you're deluding yourself and making it out to be all OK, you're losing yourself in the process."

3) Basically, she desperately wants to hear that there is (existential) worth in expressing herself through music. In Japanese, the phrase "to grasp one's brush" can be used to mean "to pursue an artistic endeavor" in general.

4) Or "all the things that are different". The verb "chigau" is used consistently through the song at the choruses ("and it's because you're different that you're so dear to me"), and while it means "to be different", it can mean "to be wrong" (i.e. to be different from what is correct). I translated it as "different" earlier in the song, but in fact, every time she says "different", there's overlap with "wrong", too - perhaps what's called wrong by society, or perhaps the mistakes she's made?

So, in the earlier choruses, what she's really saying is something like "It's precisely because we're different - it's precisely because we're "wrong" - that I find you precious, that I find myself precious, that I find life precious".
