Steuermann
Helmsman
Portside, starboard, who knows that new word
For the true course, that seemingly held out, until profit has been made
East last, west best, the rest is also known
One check for you, one hand for me, does a man keep his word like this?
Above deck, below deck, everyone's searching for that leak
Which, well-hidden, is leaking and leaking, they never found it, it was on the rear
Keel, mast, sails are, not every child knows this,
Are the bull taken by the horns,1 this course is too close-hauled
Helmsman, don't stop the ship
We're never coming back
And helmsman, the things the ship can't do
Are no obstacle for us
The ship, it heels this side, heels that side
We're even more affronted
Even donations become an insult, every donor struggles dearly2
Virtuosity, ready for honorable deeds
Nobody really forgets what it truly is, as long as no vices are to be seen
Only profligacy opens opportunities for virtuosity
To find your way, organize yourself, and if then only in pairs
Compass, even without a passport,3mutely get it off your chest, no "how" or "why"
Where are we going? - Man overboard - Not a murder, he likes it wet
Helmsman, don't stop the ship
We're never coming back
And helmsman, the things the ship can't do
Are no obstacle for us
Helmsman, don't search nearby
The distance is (our) happiness
And helmsman, the things the distance can do
Will never bring us back again
Don't stop the ship
- 1. This is a german idiom, it literally means: "To flee towards the front" or "To flee straight ahead". This means if you are being accused, to start accusing back, instead of defending yourself you will start attacking to get out of it.
- 2. Perhaps this is another sailing term I'm not aware of. I translated it with the commonly known meaning for now
- 3. This uses the old spelling, today it's spelled as "Pass". Either that or another sailing term I don't know about.
