Reida

Det galmer fra nord
over mørkeblå vande

i mørke aabne dale,
Høres galm og høje Tordenskrald
Mon ej Thor har forladt Asgård
For atter at våge over Midgård.

Med glimt og brag i nattens glød,
glemte vi kulde, blæst og vinternød.

For tordenguden og jættebekæmperens ære
Må vi alle våben bære.

Ankeret løs,
før solen går ned.

Hagall, Maðr, Ár, Ræið
Ís, Sól, Valknutr

Reida

Howling from the North
Over dark blue waters

In dark open valleys
You hear howls and claps of thunder
Don't you think Thor has left Asgard
To once again watch over Midgard

With gleams and bangs in the night's glow
We forgot cold, wind and winter despair

In honour of the thunder god and jötun bane1
We must all bear weapons

The anchor loose
Before the sun sets

Hail, Man, Year, Journey
Ice, Sun, Valknut2

  • 1. References to Thor, who was known for causing thunder and being a defender of humans (ie, by felling jötnar)
  • 2. This section is in Old Norse. Hagall also refers to the H rune and Ræið to the R rune. "Valknut" is not actually a word from the Viking Age, but a modern construct using "valr" and "knut" coined to describe an Ancient Germanic symbol, the original name of which is unknown.

Double-A was the way to write Å before a language reform in the late 30s. In using double-A rather than Å in "aabne", as well as in many of the word choices, the text is referencing the type of 19th century Danish a lot of Romanticist poetry and literature about the Viking Age, as well as the earlier translations of the Eddas, was written in.
