In my very personal opinion you are mislead: Not only the transcription here: https://genius.com/Sia-reaper-lyrics shows the former wording, but also the former meaning is clearer. What the hell signifies "heavens gazed", for instance
And you're sure about "so" instead of "saw"?

Yes, it's the only weakest point. Phonetically It may be both as far as her singing on this very recording goes but my version is more logical. It's not common practice to start an English sentence with a verb in Past Simple. Anyway, the meaning doesn't change much either. But "would drown" or "wouldn't drown" does make a difference. And she sings exactly the latter.

Anyway, any transcriptions may be faulty at some points by default. You'll have to base your translation on the one you trust. :)
