Seventeen
I see the trash in Ekoparken 1
And Walpurgis’ night’s 2 drunken parties
New Year’s chaos on the castle’s heights
Decay on New Year’s Day
I see happiness and a simple time
On a deserted artificial turf
And everything I’ve ever felt
Every tip and every low
I’ve been dragged through life
I have plenty open wounds
I have both been broken
And walked on a few clouds
I have caught my dreams
And seen them slowly break in two
I have played and lost
But also survived until now
I have also been seventeen
Felt small, felt weak
I have longed after life
And said one day I’ll get out
But now when everything is past
And I dream about back then
I stand naked before my truth
I can imagine staying here
I see older brothers’ empty rooms
When they left for something new
Bricks torn down
And the façade that they’ve adorned
I see summers full of nothing
And the students that have fled
Everything I’ve ever felt
And I know what it all meant
But I have walked these streets
For what feels like a hundred years
I have both been destroyed
And walked on a few clouds
I have slowly fallen apart
But always stood up again
I have gambled and lost
And yet always found the way back home
I have also been seventeen
Felt small, felt weak
I have longed after life
And said one day I’ll get out
But now when everything is past
And I dream about back then
I stand naked before my truth
I can imagine staying here
When nothing else was there
Rackarberget 3 had to do
Not far away from ninety-five
Is my beloved sixty-four
When nothing else was there
I had to stay a little longer
And suddenly I found life
In what back then was nothing
I have also been seventeen
Felt small, felt weak
I have longed after life
And said that one day I’ll get out
But now when everything is past
And I dream about back then
I stand naked before my truth
I can imagine staying here
I have also been seventeen
Felt small, felt weak
I have longed after life
And said that one day I’ll get out
But now when everything is past
And I dream about back then
I stand naked before my truth
I can imagine staying here

The song is a reference/answer to Veronica Maggio’s “17 år”, which talks about being seventeen in the same city (Uppsala), but wanting to get out. This is Mares’ love letter to the city and a different viewpoint, that of a longing to stay.
