La Linea

Ahí en esa orilla del mundo
No duerme la maquiladora
De un desperdicio en la tierra
El hijo del sol nació

Que embrullo la curandera
Con trapos y yerbas sobo
La piel de ese niño mulato
Que pluma su piel brotó

¡O que maravilla es esta!
Lo que el TLC provocó
De una raya imaginaria
De un chivi,chivi coló

Que un niño de ojos de luna
Palabra de flor cantó:
Este mundo material
Solamente es pasajero

Flor de maíz
El cielo te está cuidando
Llano de lumbre
La tierra que te parió

Espíritu de la tierra
Espíritu del mar
Espíritu de la suerte
Que tiene que caminar

Flor de maíz
El cielo te está cuidando
Llano de lumbre
La tierra que te parió

Espíritu de la tierra
Espíritu del mar
Espíritu de la suerte
Que tiene que caminar

The Line

There, in that corner of the world
Where the maquiladora* does not sleep
From a wasteland
The son of the sun was born

Whom the curandera wrapped**
With cloths and herbs she rubbed
the skin of that mulatto child
Skin which sprung feathers

Oh! What wonder is this!
What FTA caused***
From an imaginary line
From sifted chivi+

A moon eyed child
Sang words of flower
“This material world
Is just fleeting”

Corn flower
The sky is watching over you
Plain of fire
The earth which gave birth to you

Spirit of the earth
Spirit of the sea
Spirit of luck
Meant to wander

Corn flower
The sky is watching over you
Plain of fire
The earth which gave birth to you

Spirit of the earth
Spirit of the sea
Spirit of luck
Meant to wander

Commenti dell’autore:

La linea- literally translates as “the line,” refers to the border

*a factory, most of those in Mexico are located along the border with the United States so that they may import materials and equipment on a duty-free and tariff-free basis for assembly or manufacturing and then "re-export" the assembled or manufactured product, sometimes back to the originating country. The term maquiladora, in the Spanish language, refers to the practice of millers charging a maquila, or "miller's portion" for processing other people's grain.

**A curandero (or curandera for a female) is a traditional folk healer, a doctor or shaman in Latin America, who is dedicated to curing physical or spiritual illnesses.

***FTA- (Free Trade Agreement) though it is clear she is referring to NAFTA (North America Free Trade Agreement) for the context of the song.

+Chivi is a kind of impure salt that needs to be sifted before it can be used.
