Potion

[Verse 1]
When I wake up at 3 in the morning
Witching hour too strong
Like a witch, I know I need my potion
I, I, I might find love
I'm looking for it in an alphabet soup cup
I'm looking under my thumb (I'm looking under my thumb)
It's looking like a little rain cloud loves me
I, I, I

[Chorus]
I'll try for all of my life
Just to find someone who leaves on the light for me
Leaves on the light for me
Ah-ah

[Verse 2]
Mr Magic and the trapdoor ladies
Big walk, no talk
Glitz and glamour doesn't age like wine does
I, (I-I) I, (I-I) I, (I-I) I'm countin' on love
When the book is in the final chapter
Man, it's always sad to go
Whatcha taking from the rightful lender?
I, I, I

[Chorus]
I'll try for all of my life
Just to find someone who leaves on the light for me
Leaves on the light for me
Ah-ah
I'll try for all of my life
Just to find someone who leaves on the light for me, ah
Leaves on the light for me
Ah-ah

Annotazioni

I'll try for all of my life Just to find ...: While the phrase ‘Leave on the light’ has several different meanings depending on the context– here, Keery is referring to a longing he has for the comfort and safety one might receive from a romantic partner.

After a hectic day, Keery is looking for something loving and stable to come home to; and he won’t stop until he finds it.

Big walk, no talk: The term “Big Walk No Talk” is a play on the more common phrase “all talk, no walk”, which refers to someone who talks a lot but doesn’t back it up with action.

“Big Walk No Talk” flips that idea and usually means: Someone who lets their actions speak for themselves. A person who doesn’t brag or boast, but delivers results or makes a strong impact through what they do. Someone low-key but powerful—quiet confidence.

It can be used as a compliment, implying that someone is humble, effective, and action-oriented though.

Glitz and glamour doesn't age like wine does ...: A social commentary on how what may be trending and cool right now, will soon be a just a fad– doomed to go out of style with time. As opposed to something like wine, that ages well, money and fame sadly does not. Keery would rather hedge his bets on love itself, rather than the more materialistic things in life.

This is a theme Keery touches on in an earlier track ‘Basic Being Basic’, which is a meant to be a “Jab to anyone trying to be of the moment.” Keery states in a promotional interview for ‘The Crux’.

When the book is in the final chapter Man, ...: These lines likely use books as a metaphor for a relationship, probably something similar to library books specifically due to the focus on letting go of the books. With that lens, Keery is reflecting on the feeling of watching a relationship end before you’re eye as you’re living in the final “chapter” of the relationship, the end being nearby and inevitable.

The last line is very interesting in this context as well, as Keery asks, probably to himself, what he’s taking from the “rightful lender”, meaning the right person for him to “borrow” a relationship book with. He’s asking himself what “book”, what relationship story and experiences, he wants from the person that’s right for him. And thanks to it’s perfect placement in the song, the answer is the chorus that immediately follows.
