The buzz of radio static, in the shadow of our shelter
slipped free at last, from this worn out corner of town
Now watch, I need only think of you
and I can feel this world start to become my own
It's become so hard, but that's why I promise
I'll make reasons from these memories
I'll fear neither carmine seas nor boring1 rain
I've always known there's no such thing as forevers
there's only the moment, and so I'll hold it close
Today our spirits2 will meet once again
I counted the days alone on my fingers,
checking to make sure the sky was still blue
Look, your breath's caught up on the wind
it's off to make the snow-white flowers bloom
I've wanted to cry, but still I keep running
it's a stubborn pulse within that moves me forward
beyond the desert forests and molten earth
If this summer is to be our last,
if we disappear, then let's go together
Today our spirits will meet once again
- 1. I mean "bore" in the sense of perforate/pierce, I don't mean that the rain is dull and unexciting
- 2. I use "spirit" here in a very old sense of the word, connoting "breath"/"vitality" (e.g. re'spir'ation), since that's similar to what this Japanese term means. A literal translation of the line would read smth like, "you're going to meet my breath/vigor again today"
