The vocalist is Vera Zavitsianou [Вéра Завицјàну], 1927-2008.
Most Greeks, of a certain age, remember her as a stage actress rather than a singer.
The recording is from 1962, although it wasn’t released until 1965, the year in which I was born in Athens, Greece.
The lyrics, as well as the melody, were composed by Mikis Theodorakis (1925-2021). This song is a rare example of Theodorakis as a lyricist. Normally he set the words of well-known poets to music. Theodorakis composed great tunes, orchestrated them and conducted the musicians.

IT WOULD BE A TERRIBLE BETRAYAL if the United States were to abandon the Ukraine. Today, as I’m writing this (on the 6 October 2023), the signals from Capitol Hill, in Washington, are depressing : America is running low on weapons, and on money, for the Ukraine.
“Populist” right-wing politicians (of the Trump faction of the Republican Party) are “war-weary” and opposed to making any further sacrifices for the Ukraine. This money could be better spent at home, they argue.
Similar views are being expressed by the new government in Bratislava, and also by the populist far-right in Poland and in the Czech Republic.

The deluded architect of America’s foreign policy, the driving force behind Richard Nixon’s U-turn in favour of China, was Henry Kissinger.
America’s volte-face in favour of China since 1972 has led to China’s rise to superpower status, along with the decline of the West, in every aspect of global influence, ever since.
