Nirvana is considered grunge but Kurt personally never liked that term he said many times that Nirvana is Punk and that Punk is freedom.
Kurt formed his first band called ''Fecal Matter'' with Krist and another memeber from band Melvins and it was pretty much punk since that was Kurt's ideology, and the guy who got Kurt into whole punk scene was Buzz Osbourne :). Same goes with other bands Alice In Chains is labbeled as grunge but musically they don't share much of it with Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana and Mudhoney. Mudhoney is straight up Punk as pretty much Nirvana was. Alice In Chains is somewhat of a sludge metal combined with some blues and they originally started off as an Hair Metal band. :)
