Çilingir

Locksmith

| important: read the endnotes |

When the sun is going down in this city
Plenty of you* appear in the sky.
The deliverers** know well what's my trouble.
Tonight all of the stars are at my table.

Unless you come in, then rakı will comes in home***.
If only you both come in together tonight oh how nice
The inconsistent movie of the dream and the real one
Is it possible to not blow a fuse?

Be proud of that, it is worth.
Who says "men don't cry", then he hasn't met you.

This city doesn't have a mind to understand me
I don't have a mind to forget you
The rakı doesn't have a mind to warm.
Though it's called 'locksmith'
This table can't find a solution,
Though it kneels down in front of the You-named door

This city doesn't have a mind to understand me
I don't have a mind to forget you
The rakı doesn't have a mind to warm.
My eyelids are now tired
What still couldn't sleep is my heart,
Eye would shrink from opening if it had
Those dreams which the heart had had.

Author's comments:

"çilingir" means "locksmith".
a dining table that has been set very well and rakı is drunk, it is colloquially called "locksmith's table".

"rakı" is a very known traditional alcohol in Turkey and in Greece.

*
the Turkish pronouns
sen: singular-informal you
siz: plural you, or, formal you

"plenty of you" is related to "sen". it actually means "many copies of yours appear in the sky"
.

**
in Ottoman era, the waiters who were delivering wines used to be called "saki". i had to translate it "deliverer", it tells the wine-deliverers.

***
there is a Turkish proverb "güneş girmeyen eve doktor girer [doctor comes in home where no sun comes in]". Onur Can adopted this proverb to his lyrics. in the poem, the lover is "sun" and the rakı is "the doctor"
