A pathologic entity If everything is set in stone ...: Ren has had ongoing battles with his health since he was in his late teens. He was initially misdiagnosed with depression and bipolar disorder, then chronic fatigue syndrome, and spent years bouncing back and forth between therapists and trying different antidepressants all the while getting worse. In 2015, after suffering a huge crash and going through months of stress induced psychosis, he was finally diagnosed with Lyme disease, which caused irreversible damage to his immune system due to being misdiagnosed for so long.
As described by Ren, these lines refer to his acceptance of his illness and that this might just be the cards he's been dealt.
eleven, the Demogorgon of oppin' The ...: A reference to Eleven, a fictional character from the series Stranger Things, and the Demogorgon, also known as the Monster, a predatory humanoid creature that was eventually defeated and destroyed in a showdown with Eleven.
Sweet like a spoon full of sugar Because I'm ...: This is a reference to the 'just a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down' line from 'A Spoonful of Sugar,' a song from Walt Disney's 1964 film and 2004 musical version of Mary Poppins that is used as a metaphor for the medication Ren needs to take to control his illness.
Screech: Referring to Screech, a fictional character from Ren's songs 'Jenny's Tale' and 'Screech's Tale' by Ren, who is a 14-year-old boy, lives his life on the streets by lying and stealing and killed his twin sister, Jenny.
pacifist: Referring to Jenny, a fictional character from Ren's songs 'Jenny's Tale' and 'Screech's Tale', who is a quiet 14-year-old girl who, when faced with danger, instead of running or resisting, instinctively freezes and remains silent, and killed by his twin brother, Screech.
Ready? I’m heavy, I’m Mercury, I am Freddy: This is a reference to the mercury (Hg) heavy metal, a naturally occurring element found in air, water and soil, but it's also a dangerous toxic nerve poison. Mercury impairs the immune system's ability to fight off bacteria, making mercury poisoning particularly problematic for people with Lyme disease.
A Swanton Bomb like Hardy Brothers: This is a reference to the iconic finishing move from WWE that was originally invented by Japenese pro wrestler The Great Sasuke which was then called the "Senton Atomico," which would later be adopted, popularized and renamed to "Swonton Bomb" in the west by Jeff Hardy. It involves a diving flip off of the top rope, where the person delivering the move drives their shoulders into the midsection of the fallen opponent.
It is a metaphor for the effect that Ren's illness has on his physical and psychological condition.
Elementary, dear Watson, you might find: This phrase is thought to have been said by the detective Sherlock Holmes to his friend Dr Watson in the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) and refers to Ren's battle with trying to piece together parts of his very complex health picture, like Sherlock Holmes was always searching for the clues to solve mysteries.
Look for all the answers that I never seem to find...: These lines refer to Ren's reluctance to be the illest and the clue is in the word 'guess'. He's spent almost a decade looking for solutions to the damage that his misdiagnosed Lyme disease caused and after countless medical visits and treatments, he's still in the same situation. 'Illest' can also mean 'best' so it's a double entendre, same as 'sick boi' which is the name of one his songs that was released on January 20, 2023.
Left, right in, I’m striking like I’m biting like ...: Referring to the infamous incident when Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield's ear in the third round of their heavyweight rematch on June 28, 1997.
