Υπάρχει
Υπάρχει απ'τους σκληρούς θεούς προορισμένος
ένας παγκόσμιος πόνος
κι ο καθένας μας παίρνει για μεράδι του
ό,τι μπορεί να σηκώση.
Συλλογίζομαι τους αστόχαστους
που φορτώθηκαν πρόθυμα στο στήθος τους
πιο πολύ απ' ό,τι μπορούσανε,
αλαφρώνοντας έτσι κάπως το κοινό βάρος:
τον ήρωα και τον μάρτυρα και τον εγκληματία.
Παρακαλώ, να μας συγχωρέσουν.
Θυμόμαστε.

There is a universal pain
destined by the cruel gods
and each of us takes his share
depending on how much he can bear.
I'm thinking of the mindless
who they were willingly
burdened in their chest
more than they could bear, relieving somehow the common burden: the hero and the martyr and the criminal.
