I think it is actually haram for women to sing in muslim society so I guess the more religious girls refrain from singing in public...
Well, surely it's a factor. However, there is no precisely clear text on the matter. It's a misconception that it's just the women though. Extreme people who believe this will hold that singing is haram in all cases, done by men or women. However, as someone from an Arab Muslim country, I find that most sane people in the Arab world, regard this as backward thinking... since, well obviously, singing hurts no one. :)
