Nicolas

Nicolas

No, it's just a song that comes around now and then,
Just a smile, in memory of a boy from another time.
When my days are grey,
When it snows on my life, I go back in my memory
To the French high school where one night he waited for me.
He smiled. Nicolas.

Nicolas, Nicolas, my first tear was for you alone.
We were kids, our pain was as worthy as that of the greats.
Nicolas, Nicolas, it was love, we didn't know that.
Such is life, that it takes us,
It carries us where it wants and where it goes.

A man-child, his eyes too big, on a dock, crying.
It has snowed a lot since then there, on Paris,
And he knows nothing, of me and of my life,
What I do, who I am.
He doesn't know the other Maritza; he keeps the real one there.

Nicolas, Nicolas my first heartache has your name.
I knew that I would never1 come back here to you.
Nicolas, Nicolas it was love, we didn't know that.
Such is time, that flies,
That makes up all our pains and our joys.

Nicolas, Nicolas, my first tear was for you alone.
We were kids, our pain was as worthy as that of the greats.
Nicolas, Nicolas, it was love, we didn't know that.
Such is life, that it takes us,
It carries us where it wants and where it goes.
Nicolas, Nicolas.....

  • 1. It's the simple future tense in the French lyrics but that just doesn't sound right in English.

Oops. I didn't notice there was already an English translation of this song on the site. Which hardly varies from mine. Which is no surprise given the propensity of great minds to think alike. This isn't the first time I've had a problem where I have specifically checked to see whether a translation into English or French (the only languages I know) already existed, made sure it didn't, only to discover after I've posted my effort that there indeed already was one. Oh well. It wasn't a complete waste. I had no idea who Sylvie Vartan was. Wikipédia to the rescue. It seems I've been living under a rock. Plus, Michael Vartan of the TV series "Alias," which I watched from beginning to end, is related to her. Small world.

Speaking of not a complete waste . . . YouTube has barred the video supplied on the lyrics page from viewing in my country. Thank you very not at all. So I hunted this down:
