Ziua cârtiţei* este sărbătorită pe data de 2 februarie în S.U.A. şi Canada; potrivit credinţei populare, dacă în această zi este soare atunci când cârtiţa iese din bârlog şi aceasta îşi vede umbra în spate, înseamnă că iarna va mai dura încă o lună şi jumătate, dacă este înnorat atunci când cârtiţa iese din bârlog, aceasta îşi va părăsi vizuina, ceea ce înseamnă că iarna e pe sfârşite.
