It began with horse racing. Substituting like horses in a race. They substituted names, pedigrees for the exact duplicates. The hosre double would be called 'a ringer'.
A person or thing that bears a strong resemblance to someone or something else, or is an exact counterpart. As a son is often, a dead ringer for his dad, his father.
It may also refer to the sound of someone's voice and not just their appearance, both in person, or on a phone. If you are imitating a person, you may be a dead ringer for them.
Dead ringers is also a Horseshoes game term. Ringer is another term as well in the game.
