Metall
In gieriger Esse
bricht das Erz aus schwerem Stein
In gleißender Lohe
erkennen wir unser Sein
Im Zorn gibt uns der Hammer
seinen gnadenlosen Takt
Die Ruhe fällt zur Seite,
die Zeit des Eisens ist erwacht
Nur unter harten Schlägen
wird Härteres gebor'n
So hiebt er in das Dasein,
treibt die Kanten hin zur Form
Oh Hammer, schlag den Takt,
brich jeden schwachen Grat
Der tote Stoff muss zäh sein,
heiß wie kalt und eisenhart
Eine laute Sinfonie, die leise Klänge bricht,
glühendes Metall der Eisenschädel Tageslicht
Wir sind Metall! ...
in Aschefunken sinkt
Will der sein,
der ruhlos in Eisen fällt
Wenn Waffenklang aus Metall
zuletzt meine Miene hellt
Wir sind Metall
...toter Stoff - heiß und kalt
toter Stoff - heiß und kalt
Schüret die Tiegel,
seid nicht sparsam mit der Glut!
Schreibt über der Esse,
die Zeichen aus Schmerz und Wut!
Atmet mit uns Asche,
steigt hernieder in die Flammenflut!
Der Freiheit Zorn hält Wache
so verbrennt euch an dem eignen Leib!
Wir sind Metall!
Wir sind Metall!
Wir sind Metall!
Wir sind Metall! ...
Metal
Within the ravenous forge
the ore breaks out of heavy rock
In gleaming blaze
We recognize our being1
The hammer gives us full of anger2
Its merciless beat
Silence falls over to the side
The time of iron has awoken
Only under heavy blows
Will something harder be born3
So he strikes into the Existence
Forces the edges into shape
Oh hammer, beat the rhythm
And break every weak edge4
The dead matter has to be tenacious,
Whether it's hot or cold5, and as hard as iron
A loud symphony that breaks quiet sounds,
Glowing metal the daylight of the ironheads
We are metal! ...
Metal is our heart - it's pulsing with hammer's beat
Metal is our head - harder than the wall
Metal is our fist, it chops apart and crushes
Cruel, hot and cold - we are metal
We are metal!
We are - metal is our heart -
it's pulsing with the hammer's beat
we are - metal is our head
breaks through every wall
we are - metal is our fist -
it chops apart and crushes
we are children of the ore forest6 -
we are metal!
Want to be the one,
who struggles with7 cold longing
When this world
Sinks into8 ash sparks
Want to be the one
Who restlessly falls into iron9
While the sound of weaponry made of metal10
lights up my face at last
We are metal
...dead matter - hot and cold
dead matter - hot and cold
Fuel the crucible
Don't be thrifty with the embers
Inscribe above the forge
The signs of pain and anger!11
Breath ashes with us
Descend into the flood of flames!
The wrath of the freedom keeps watch
So burn yourself on your own body12
We are metal
We are metal
We are metal
We are metal...
- 1. means something like "We realize what we are".
- 2. word by word: "in wrath the hammer gives us".
- 3. word by word "something harder is born".
- 4. can also mean "ridge".
- 5. word by word: "as hot as cold".
- 6. Perhaps they mean the "Erzgebirge" ("Ore Mountains"), a mountain range in Germany.
- 7. =against
- 8. or "Sinks down, surrounded by"
- 9. could theoretically also mean "Who restlessly falls down while being clad in iron"
- 10. the "made of weapon" refers to the "sound (of weaponry)", not to the "weaponry"
- 11. all imperative forms in this and the next paragraph refer to a plural addressee (meaning, it doesn't refer to "you" (single person) but to "you all")
- 12. A non-metalhead told me that this line needs an explaination :)
All of the following is my own interpretation, no guarantee!
This verse there is a metaphor for a concert, to be exact for the crowd in front of the stage. I'm not completely sure, but I think it's about moshing. Or perhaps about dancing.
And "am eigenen Leib" ("on your own body") is a phrase normally used in expressions that have something to do with experiencing something on your own, direct, personally, with your own senses.
Most likely it's also a kind of pun with the phrase "bei lebendigem Leib verbrennen" (~ "to burn alive").
The burning is 1. related to the forging-metaphor of the whole song. And 2. it refers to the heat and the violence of moshing.

Komentarz autora:
The expression "Metall" only refers to iron, copper etc., the music genre is called "Metal". In English it's the same word, and this song obviously also refers to that music genre.
I only did this translation for practicing, and because I really like the lyrics and translating something into another language often helps me seeing details I didn't see before. So it propably is not the best translation.
I hope someone helps me improving it :)
And thanks for the help, SilentRebel83!
