On the dole
Meanings of "On the dole"
Angol
To be getting government benefits in the absence of work by being unemployed as a result of; lay-off, bankruptcy, termination or other external factors. Some find reasons not to work both real and by created means. During periods of recession like The Great Depression in the US during the 1930s large masses of people were 'on the dole'. A depression during an economic recession has occurred in different countries throughout the world. A famous song "Brother Can You Spare A Dime" is from The Great Depression. Today if someone is unemployed and intends to work it's 'getting unemployment', if it's no intention to work, or fully disabled (getting disability) it's 'on welfare'.
